What are the completely bronze colored beetles that, without magnification, look like Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica)? Do they cause similar problems to garden plants?

Please send us photos of the beetles so we can see what you may be dealing with. Place a ruler next to them for size. Some possibilities may be masksed chafer, oriental baetle, or asiatic garden beetle.

I finally found some dead examples in good condition.

This looks like a masked chafer beetle. The adults cause minor feeding damage on some plants. The grubs (larval stage) in some cases can be problematic in lawns.
