Snake ID

We have a few of these little dudes in our yard this summer. Can you ID? This one was about 9" long.

That is a Northwestern garter snake (Thamnohis ordinoides) and based on the size it was probably born last year. These garter snakes are particularly helpful in the garden as they love to eat slugs.

They are very polymorphic and come in a range of colors so people often think they are seeing different species of snakes when they all may be the same.
