This plant popped up in ours and the neighbor's yard about 4 years ago. It has spread so much each year. It seems to like the wetter areas. Can you identify for me? If so, what can we do to get rid of it. I have a lot of weeds in my yard, lol, but this one leaves ugly bare spots when it dies. Thanks in advance
This is Virginia Buttonweed (Diodia virginiana).
It is a perennial weed, here is a page on it: http://oak.ppws.vt.edu/~flessner/weedguide/diqvi.htm
It is a difficult weed to control. An herbicide containing the active ingredient Triclopyr can be used, but may take repeated applications.
It doesn't look like you have much turf cover at all at this point, and it may be time to consider a lawn renovation this fall, after you have controlled this weed.
Here is our Lawn Renovation publication with all the steps to get this done: http://extension.umd.edu/sites/extension.umd.edu/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG102%20La...
Thank you so much! I've been searching by myself for a while with no luck. You provide a great service! Btw, that's my neighbor's yard .
