hard maple early leaf loss

I have a hard maple tree, about 30 years old and a lot of leaves are turning brown and falling off. Why would this be happening this early in the year?

It would be very difficult for me to say without detailed photographs of the tree and the leaves. You should also note where in the tree the leaves are turning, whether you note any problems on the trunk or branches, and anything that might have changed around the tree (construction, herbicide use, etc.) You might try this diagnostic site:
