Perennial sunflower can actually refer to several species of the genus Helianthus:

This might be the problem you are having when talking to people. Specify perennial Helianthus instead of perennial sunflower. Also, you may have to decide which of the many Helianthus species you are interested in. Some examples are H. maximiliani, H. occidentalis and H. multiflorus. Often prairie plant nurseries carry perennial Helianthus:
