Sweet Potato Slips

Asked June 30, 2017, 10:27 PM EDT

Hello, I wanted to grow Sweet Potatoes for next year. Can I just get any sweet potato from the grocery store or do they need to be organic? Also for Maryland, when should I begin doing the slips (mid-March?). Do I need to put them under lights or can they sit by a window? When I pull off the plants from the sweet potato, do I plant them in ground right away or should I put them in a cup of water to develop roots? Thanks!

There is a risk of growing slips from store potatoes. The store potatoes may be symptomless carriers of disease and there may be issues with sprout inhibitors.
It is best to search for slips through a nursery or online seed source.
