Geese in the Garden

Asked June 30, 2017, 4:04 PM EDT

I am setting up a garden at a nursery school. The school is next to a lake with geese living close by. We are working on securing the fencing better but I believe they can and do fly in too. Will they eat herb plants and other vegetables? I do not want to spend the schools money only to feed the geese. Also any suggestions for keeping them away? Thank you.

Geese can feed on vegetables and herbs. You will have to do some investigation regarding specific goose fencing and other tactics to prevent damage. You will have to decide if you are dedicated enough for a long term commitment. Here is a page from the DNR on controlling conflicts with geese. There are no easy answers. http://dnr2.maryland.gov/wildlife/Pages/plants_wildlife/ResGeeseProblem.aspx
