horse manure compost

Asked June 30, 2017, 11:45 AM EDT

I was told I could use pure horse manure compost to plant my garden in. Just that, not soil or anything else. Is that right?

Thanks for your question about horse manure. I'm not sure whether you have horses, or whether you're purchasing the manure from a horse owner. But the short answer is "no" you cannot use horse manure as the only base for your garden. Although (aged) manure is a valuable commodity in the garden, plants need soil, and manure is just one part of the soil 'ingredients.' Here's a link to an article about composting horse manure (if it isn't already aged enough) and another article that explains soils and nutrients. (Manure is discussed on page 4, and explains how much to use and how to apply it.)

Hope these are helpful to you. Good luck!
