Fertilizers to use
I live in Salisbury Md and each year buying fertilizers get more frustrating. The Scotts brand is expensive and yet I feel it does not deliver the results. I dont want to throw money away on other brands. Is there a specific combination of ingredients i should look for that will help lawns in our area throughout the year. if there is a brand that is better geared to our soil and climate that would be helpful.
The first thing we recommend is to have your soil tested (if you haven't done so in the past three years). This the test will give you information on your soil pH, nutrient content, and organic matter. It will also tell you if you need to add any specific nutrients or amendments, and which ones. Take a look at our web page on soil testing, which includes information on how to do a soil test and a list of labs where you can send your sample:
It doesn't really matter which brand of lawn fertilizer you use, as they all will contain the same type of material to provide the nutrient content. All lawn fertilizers now sold Maryland are formulated to comply with the lawn fertilizer law. Lawn maintenance fertilizers have zero phosphorus in them and contain at least 20% slow-release nitrogen. Specialty products containing phosphorus are still available and may be used when a soil test indicates the need for phosphorus or when a homeowner or business is establishing, repairing, or patching a lawn.
