Compact American Viburnum bush

Asked June 22, 2017, 9:39 AM EDT

Our Viburnum bush is 18 years old. We have kept it trimmed...but it is now getting too tall. Can I cut it down by 1/2 or more? If so, must I wait until after a hard frost? Do you recommend that I have this done professionally? I want the cute trimmed bush I used to have:) Thanks! Barb Johnson

Cutting off by 1/3rd is better than by 1/2, 1/2 is a little too much at one time. Dormant pruning is best. Summer pruning stresses shrubs and stimulates growth which
negates some of the benefits of pruning for shape.
