Are monarch caterpillars earlier than usual this year?

Asked June 20, 2017, 7:41 PM EDT

We just found two, 2" long, monarch caterpillars eating an un-opened bloom in a patch of milkweed. Isn't it unusual to find caterpillars this early in the season and that they are eating the bloom vs the leaves of milkweed?

Our entomologist says that neither of those things is uncommon.
It is, however, great to hear.
Enjoy, and thanks for feeding them.
