Pear Tree Problem

Asked June 19, 2017, 5:46 PM EDT

Hello - we need help identifying a recurring problem with our 2 pear trees...our trees produce a lot of pears each year but early in the season the fruit and leaves develop black spots. What is this and what can we do to prevent and/or treat it? (2photos attached). Thank you!!

Thank you for the question. A question very similar to yours has been asked in the past and I will use another Expert's response to try and help you. The University of Minnesota doesn't have a lot of information on pear disease so please respond to the following questions aimed at providing us with more information.

Because you said this occurs every year, I am thinking this is a disease issue and your tree is susceptible to the disease.

To help zero in on the disease, can you please provide more info about the black spots? For example, can you wipe off the black splotches> Are they raised? Rough? or smooth? Is the inside of the fruit damaged?

Also, how is the rest of the tree? It looks like you have some leaf damage - how about leaf drop / discoloration? Any dark areas on the branches? Cracks? Dieback?

What variety of pear tree is this?
