Sumer Pruning: To trim or not to trim

Asked June 19, 2017, 12:15 PM EDT

Just plated two weeping cherry trees 2 weeks ago. One has branches about to touch the ground. Been growing! Should I trim those branches when they get close to the ground even if it's not season for it? And if so do I seal where I cut to avoid any disease entering the tree?

Actually, summer is a good time to prune cherries. Shoot growth is finished for the year and infection from bacterial canker is unlikely. If you trim back into this year's growth your will get branching from the buds next year. If you trim back into two year wood you will stop grow and you will get branching further back.
