leaf damage

What caused the leaf damage to this elm?

This looks like anthracnose, a fungal disease that commonly occurs when we have wet cool springs. Unless this is a recurring problem and a majority of the tree is affected, it does not warrant treatment.

It's helpful to keep in mind that trees produce many more leaves than they need, for just such situations.
