Watering newly planted trees

Asked June 12, 2017, 1:04 PM EDT

We just planted 7 12' - 15' cherry trees on our church property and would like to know if there is a recommended watering routine for newly planted trees during the first year, particularly going into this very hot spell.

Howard County Maryland watering trees

Check soil moisture of newly planted trees and shrubs at least once a week especially during dry periods in the summer. Soil that is moist or damp to the touch is fine. You may need to move the mulch aside and probe with a screwdriver. If the soil begins to dry out, water the plant thoroughly. Do not overwater; however, you can easily drown newly planted trees and shrubs through too much tender loving care with the hose. Make sure mulch is no thicker than several inches and keep away from the base of the trunk.
