Norway spruce trees

Asked June 8, 2017, 12:55 PM EDT

I was wondering about the root system of a Norway spruce. How deep the roots go, how far out they spread and if they will cause problems with my leach field if planted too close. Also how vulnerable are they to the spruce diseases out there. Thanks

Most conifer root systems are fairly shallow. Here is a fact sheet from the Forest Service that talks about Norway spruce and what insect and disease issues it can be susceptible to. Most of the time spruce spider mite is the most diagnosed here in Ohio.

The following 2 fact sheets talk about planting on and around septic systems. Nothing seems to indicate that Norway is a bad species to use but it isn't on most of the recommended lists.
