Trees dropping leaves in June

Asked June 8, 2017, 12:51 PM EDT

We've had an unusually cool, wet spring that extended into early June. What might be the cause of ornamental trees dropping their leaves this week as rapidly rising temperatures and dry conditions come on?

Sycamore trees have been dropping leaves over the last several days because of anthracnose (a fungal leaf disease). Some crabapples have been losing leaves because of apple scab (another fungal leaf disease).

Fungal leaf diseases are typically most severe when the weather in spring is cool and wet.

Fortunately, most fungal leaf diseases are not life threatening.
