When to prune birds nest spruce

Asked June 2, 2017, 9:04 PM EDT

Have a bird's nest spruce about 10 years old. I have never pruned it. Am now realizing it takes up too much room in current location. Choices are to prune to a more manageable size or try to transplant. Diameter is about 4 feet. I would like to do now if possible.

The spruce are very difficult to transplant successfully. Your spruce is also old and well established making it more difficult to transplant. Birds nest spruce also are not very tolerant of pruning. For information on how to prune a spruce please see the fact sheet.
