poor germination in zinnias

Asked June 2, 2017, 4:34 PM EDT

Hi, in the past I have had pretty good luck as an experienced gardener, direct seeding zinnia seeds. This spring I sowed them twice and have seen not one seedling. Could it be the damp cool spring we have had? I know I could have started seedlings but didn't have time this year..........thanks, jan

There is a very good chance the damp, cool weather is the reason for poor germination this year. Zinnias love warm weather. Also, are you starting with fresh seeds? There is still plenty of time to sow zinnias from seeds -- even up to mid-July for flowering in late summer/early fall.
