What is this brownish growth on the tree branch?

Prince George's County Maryland black knot trees

We cannot say for sure but the tree looks like it may be a cherry tree. The gall on the stem is called black knot, caused by a fungus. All you can do is prune at least 4 inches below the gall/growth during dry weather. Discard in the trash.
