My ficus plant has suddenly developed little flakes of something on the leaves and the leaves are very sticky. It looks like the plant may be dying. What do you think this might be?

Your ficus has an infestation of an insect known as scale. Here is some info (scroll down to the question about the ficus):

What do I do about it?

Purchase a registered houseplant insecticide for scale and apply it according to the label directions. These insects are difficult to control and retreatment a couple of weeks later may be necessary. It is recommended to spray the plant outdoors on a reasonably nice day and bring it back inside once the product has dried.
