Mulberry Tree - Can you eat the berries

Asked May 21, 2017, 7:11 PM EDT

We have this tree in our yard which I suspect to be a mulberry tree. Can you eat the berries from it?

You are right, these are mulberries. They are ripe when they are darker in color, but they're edible. The fruit varies in flavor from tree to tree; some have no taste, others are delicious. If they're tasty, go ahead and enjoy. One warning: make sure the tree has not been sprayed if it's out in a roadway or other area where you don't know its history.

You can use them in recipes like you'd use blackberries although sometimes the stem and core are tough and should be removed. They're one of my favorite spring treats.
