Pruning an established plum tree

Asked May 20, 2017, 6:52 PM EDT

Hi, We moved into a new home recently that has an established plum tree and apple tree. Both are old and probably over 25 feet tall. When is the best time to prune these trees? Also at what height should they be pruned to. thank you

Thank you for your question about pruning your fruit trees. Here's a link to an OSU article on training and pruning in the home garden. You'll see that it is recommended that pruning be done "when all danger from fall or early winter freeze has passed, but before full bloom in spring." It is difficult to recommend a height, because we don't have an idea of the shape that these trees are in, or how they've been pruned in the past. But you'll find information on apple trees on pages 8 and 9, and for prune trees on page 10.

Since your trees are so large, there is an element of safety to be considered. You might want to consider hiring a licensed arborist familiar with fruit trees to handle it for you. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
