Aspen Top Broken Off due to Storm Damage

Asked May 20, 2017, 10:34 AM EDT

The recent spring storm broke the top of a healthy Aspen Tree. The trunk diameter is ~2 inches at the break. Is there anything we can do to fix this?

Hello,

You cannot repair a broken tree, but you can attempt to clean up the wound and make a good pruning cut where the tree was damaged. But if the top has been damaged, then carefully assess the tree and determine if it still looks aesthetically pleasing and if the tree is worth investing time and money into.

Without photos and a sense of the size of the damage, it's difficult to say. Your best bet is to contact a certified arborist (trained by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)) and have them assess the tree and offer pruning recommendations. Right now, you can imagine, they are pretty busy. But here's the list of recommended arborists that are licensed to do work in the City of Fort Collins: https://www.fcgov.com/forestry/pdf/arboristslist.pdf?1466178504
