We planted evergreen across the front of our country home (on a gravel road) 35 years ago. Now they are drying and would like to replace them with a fast growing bush/shrub that would help keep the dust from coming into the yard. Any ideas? Had thought of lilac, is that a good one? House is 150 feet from road.
I'd probably stick with an evergreen. Lilacs (and other deciduous shrubs) will lose their foliage before there is permanent snow cover, and won't get it back until after the snow is gone. I think eastern red cedar would be a good choice:
Or perhaps arborvitae.
If you decide to go the deciduous route, ninebark might be a good choice.
