Tiny black "pegs" on asparagus

Asked May 18, 2017, 8:37 PM EDT

I have a small bed of asparagus put in just under 3 years ago. I am harvesting the first few spears and there are multiple tiny black 'pegs' all along the stem. Is this some kind of infestation and if so, what can I do about it? Thank you!

These pegs are the eggs of the Common Asparagus Beetle. See this factsheet for more information: https://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/asparagus-beetles/ The eggs, which do not damage the spears, may be removed by hand either before or after harvesting the spears.

You may wish to monitor for the adults this year; they may be handpicked and dropped into a container of soapy water. This will help reduce the chance of a repeat appearance of eggs next year.
