Looking to purchase blueberry plants

Asked May 16, 2017, 10:19 AM EDT

Good morning, I am looking to purchase about 10 blueberry plants for my home garden and was wondering if there is a good place to purchase them from. I have seen a nice farm in NJ (DiMeo) but that is a good hike. I am located in Prince George's County. Would you also recommend any particular varieties that grow well here? Thank you.

Good morning. There are several varies of blueberries that will grow well in your area. See this link for the varieties we recommend, as well as information on site preparation and planting: https://extension.umd.edu/growit/fruits/blueberries-selection-and-planting.

Be sure to get a soil test and invest time in preparation of your soil. Blueberries require acidic soils (pH 4.3 - 5.3) high in organic matter to be successful. This usually requires an application of sulfur (ideally in the fall before spring planting). Here is information on soil testing: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/soils/soil-testing.

As part of University of Maryland Extension policy, we are not permitted to recommend specific products or companies from where you could purchase plants. We recommend that your look for a nursery that sells certified blueberry plants. These nurseries have to go through testing to make sure they are selling virus-free stock.
