Chipmunks vs Blueberry Bushes

Asked May 13, 2017, 4:03 PM EDT

I have some chipmunk holes next to my blueberry bushes. I only have two bushes in a slightly raised bed. I fill them in, but soon they are open again, so I know they are still using them. Will the chipmunks cause damage to the bushes? If so, what is the best way to eliminate or control them? Thanks, Shirley

Chipmunks may not eat your berries or plants, but they can damage the root system. There is not a lot that can be done about them. Start by making your yard less attractive to them by removing and cleaning up brush and wood piles and brushy areas. Unfortunately, repellents aren't especially effective and exclusion is nearly impossible. You could try hardware cloth or chicken wire on the surface of the soil around the plants.
