Hi. We had planted a Tonto Crepe Myrtle last year in our yard. It had nice leaves and big flowers last year. However this year it has no leaves or buds on the small branches ( that are all dry now after the winter ). There is however two very small buds at the bottom of the plant. Is the plant still good? Can it reemerge? Tonto Crepe Myrtles are almost small trees - so if it starts from grounds up every year how will it grow tall? Should I get rid of the small dried up branches? Thanks if you can reply.

Franklin County Ohio crepe myrtle

You will have to wait and see what it does. If all the growth comes from the base this year that doesn't necessarily mean it will do so every year. As I look it up the USDA hardiness zone for this plant it is zone 6-9 which means that franklin county falls just at the edge of its hardiness zone - which could mean that this plant will die back occasionally.
