What is growing on my currant?

Asked May 8, 2017, 8:37 PM EDT

Pictured is what I think is a black current with white stuff growing on the stem. As far as I can see there is nothing on the leaves so I was not sure if it is powdery mildew or not. If you could ID it I would be very grateful. Thanks Amanda

Hello Amanda,

This apparent non-pathogenic fungi has been recorded this year across a wide area of the Kenai this year. It does not appear to be harmful and may be a member of the slime mold group. If I am able to determine more about this fungi, I will let you know. If you do find that it is harming your plant, please send me a message.

If you are interested in using a fungicide, fungicidal products such as Daconil should most likely suppress it. Follow all label precautions and directions if using a fungicide.

If you have more questions, please let me know.

Best Regards,
Casey
