Which tree to plant

Asked May 4, 2017, 10:26 PM EDT

Hello,

I live in South Park Hill, Denver, CO. I am wanting to plant a tree in the strip between the street and sidewalk. Could you tell me if I should get a soil test or if I am ok picking from "approved street tree list for Denver's public right-of-ways". I have no irrigation system.
Thank you, Jessica

You have a number of very good options for planting a tree in the area between the street and sidewalk. However, it is very important that you do supplemental watering of whatever tree you select as any tree, even one that is very drought tolerant, will need additional water while it is forming it's root structure - generally 1-2 years at a minimum. Choosing a tree from the approved street tree list for Denver's public right-of-ways is highly recommended as these trees have been selected for the climatic and soil conditions of the Denver area. I am including the website links for these resources.
