Emerald ash tree borer

Asked May 1, 2017, 1:44 PM EDT

I have an ash tree infected with this insect and it shows signs of dying. Is there any problem with giving the cut wood to my son who lives in Gettysburg for fireplace burning. Harry Fees

Hi Harry:
In most cases, it is not a good idea to move firewood even if there isn't a quarantine. Since EAB is well established in PA and you are not moving it far, it can be moved to Adams County. However, do you know if it is common where your son lives (particularly on any ash trees he has)? The sooner he burns it the better. Adults will be emerging by mid-June.
