What are these on our tree leaves?

Asked April 28, 2017, 1:25 PM EDT

I noticed these markings on quite a few leaves on a tree in our yard. I was wondering what are they? Bugs? Disease? Thank you, Charlene deJetley

Hi Charlene,

These are called eyespot galls. They are caused by an insect called a gall midge. Although the spots can be unsightly, they are not harmful to the overall health of the tree. They are common on maple trees. Here is additional information about them: http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/eyespot-galls-trees.
