Crape Myrtle

Asked April 25, 2017, 3:13 PM EDT

I am a bit worried about my crepe myrtle which was planted last Spring and bloomed beautifully last year. This year there is new growth emerging but the ends of the branches are brown. I have attached a picture. Is there anything I should do? Should I trim the dead off of the crepe myrtle or leave it alone? I have two crepe myrtles and both look the same. Pictures attached.

Thank you for your question. You can prune out the dead branches. On shrubs, one way to test to see if the branches are still alive would be to scrape away a bit of the bark with your fingernail. If you do not see any green tissue, the branch is dead and you can prune it out.
