replacing black walnut trees

Asked April 22, 2017, 3:58 PM EDT

I have several black walnut trees. I want to replace 5. When these are cut down what has to be done to the soil to put in trees? Is it true maple trees will live as a replacement? If not what trees are appropriate?

Black walnut trees produce the chemical juglone which is toxic to many other plants and trees. However, most maples are tolerant of juglone along with a number of other trees and shrubs. the following link will provide the list of trees and shrubs tolerant of juglone.
