Stuff growing on my apple trees

Asked April 16, 2017, 10:17 PM EDT

The stuff in the picture is growing on many of the trees in my backyard. What is it and do I need to treat these trees to protect them from this stuff? It is also in my apple trees.

This is a harmless lichen, an organism that is part plant with chlorophyll and part fungi. It does not damage the tree. However, it seems to grow more profusely on weakened trees, so if you see a tree with a lot of lichen, it may be an alert that the tree is stressed or declining. For more information, search 'lichen' on our website search box.
