mulch off perennials

Asked April 7, 2017, 12:01 PM EDT

I cover my perennials with leaves over winter. They're poking out all over the place with this warm spring. Is it too early to pull the leaves off yet? (I know I wouldn't dare plant annuals yet - but these perennials seem pretty determined to grow, so I hate to keep them covered.) At the same time, I want to be cautious - I know there's lots of potential for freezes yet.

Unless the mulch is impeding plant growth let it be and most plants will grow right through. Leaving it in place will also hold down weed seeds and improve moisture retention.
