Periodic multiple spider bites

Asked April 4, 2017, 9:07 PM EDT

Starting in September, about once a month, or every couple months my son woke up with a spider bite or two on his arm & hand. In February he woke up with numerous bites on his hand and arm.. about 5. After that, we sprayed his room, in the air ducts too. We changed his mattress changed where his bed is in his room, etc. This morning, again, he woke up with 5 bites on his neck and two on his arm. I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do next

I strongly doubt your son is being bitten by spiders so regularly. The only spiders that routinely could bite a human in the midwest would cause a great deal of searing pain and poisoning symptoms, so we can rule that out.

One possibility is bedbugs. Bedbugs have become somewhat epidemic in the US in the last 5-10 years, partly due to so much international travel, and partly due to the insects developing resistance to some of the more common insecticides. I would ask to you visit the Purdue Bed Bug site and review some of the information we have there: https://extension.entm.purdue.edu/bedbugs/ . There are links to videos on the right side of the page, including one for identifying symptoms.

If this is not what you are seeing, you might want to download this Ohio State publication on Mystery Bugs and Bites: http://ohioline.osu.edu/factsheet/ent-66.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
