Large old spruce tree shows sudden decline

Asked April 3, 2017, 6:26 PM EDT

Hello friends! I'm mystified as to what happened (seemingly over the winter) to a spruce tree next to my home. The bottom branches are dying while the upper branches are just fine. I've attached images. I'm heartbroken that something may be fatally wrong! It has been really healthy until now! Thank you!

There are several diseases that could be causing the problem. The most likely are Cytospora canker or Rhizosphaera needle cast, but it could also be Lirula needle blight. None are good diseases to have. See http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/trees-shrubs/spruce-tree-diseases/ for more information on diagnosing and treating spruce problems. Good luck!
