Soil testing of lawn

Do you'll do soil testing of residential yards? If so how do I need to take samples? Also how long does it take to get results and cost?

Yes, we do offer soil testing for home lawns. For established lawns, sample the top 2 inches of soil only. Do not include grass, roots or thatch in the sample. For areas to be tilled up for a new lawn, sample the top 4 inches of soil. It is a good idea to sample front and back yards separately. Samples can be taken with a garden shovel or trowel. Make sure to gather soil samples from random locations in the lawn to show a well-represented sample of the entire area.

For lawn samples, do not sample under the drip line of trees. Avoid taking samples close to driveways or streets, unless this is treated as a "problem area", which would require a separate sample.

The cost for a regular, routine soil test is $7.00 and usually takes about a week to get back. If you have any other questions, please contact me at the Warren County Extension Office at (270) 842-1681. Thanks!
