Help! 50 year old neglected vine

Asked March 23, 2017, 3:59 PM EDT

We recently bought a house and with it came a enormous grapevine. Im not familiar with them but have google and understand it needs to be pruned each year. Can you point me in the right direction of where to begin? Thanks oh it was planted in 1957 when the house was built.

Here is a link to a publication that has some pictures on page 12 of what a pruned grapevine should look like: https://content.ces.ncsu.edu/grapes-and-berries-for-the-garden. Grapevines do need an annual pruning to maintain good fruit production. Here also is a link to a video we did on pruning grapevines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTDdadTNwao&t=10s.

With neglected vines, it will be best to really cut it back to "start over" and focus on re-establishing a trunk and main arms coming from the trunk. You would lose fruit production for the first year or so but this will rejuvenate it so that it comes back better.
