Weed and seed?

Asked March 21, 2017, 9:24 AM EDT

I have a large grassy area that is full of crabgrass and stilt grass.Last fall I used Fusilade II Herbicide (Fluazifop 24.5%) to kill then waited several weeks, aerated and reseeded with turf grass. The area is some distance form a water source so with the drought the germination was poor. I am wondering if there is a product that I can apply that will prevent the annual grassy weeds while allowing me to reseed? Can you recommend an approach to encourage turf grass in this area?

There is a preemergent called Siduron (Trade name Tupersan) that allows you to seed and apply a preemergent. This will require several applications for control. Look at the attached publication for more information. We do not have research on the Siduron and stiltgrass control but it should have some activity.

To encourage turf test your soil, control weeds, seed and fertilize in the fall, mow at the proper height, grass cycle, etc. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/soils/soil-testing
