Timing of preemergent this year (2017)

Asked March 7, 2017, 3:26 PM EST

With the very warm weather this winter, I am wondering about when to apply a preemergent to my lawn. I have always used forsythia blooming as the time to apply, but that seems too early, particularly since it is in full bloom and we have had a couple of very cold nights (teens and twenties) recently. My objective is to control Japanese Stilt Grass as well as Crabgrass. Any advice? Thanks!

It has been a very strange year.
You can put the preemergent herbicide (preferably without added nitrogen fertilizer) down any time now.
If it gets and stays cold (not likely) you may want to apply again in six weeks.
