Holly Leaf

Asked March 7, 2017, 9:51 AM EST

Hello, I have brown spots on the leaves of all of my holy bushes. What is wrong and what should I do to fix it? They are planted in full sun and are in heavy clay soil. I am planning on planting a number of other perennials nearby- will this problem with the holly be contagious? Thank you,

Our plant pathologist looked at your photo and says that this is just a minor fungal leaf spot. It is not anything to be concerned about.
It should not spread to your other plantings, but do practice strategies for plant health by planting healthy stock and planning for mature spacing so that airflow in the bed is good and leaves don't stay wet for long periods of time.
If the soil is heavy clay as you say, add organic material like aged manure, compost or Leaf-Gro in the planting area.
