Mountain Pine Beetle in Colorado Springs?

Asked March 5, 2017, 2:47 PM EST

I've notice what looks to me like evidence of Mountain Pine Beetle on a couple of pine trees in my neighborhood in the upper Skyway area of Colorado Springs. Can you confirm based on the attached photos?

Thank you for your question. I cannot give a definitive response because I do not know the type of pine tree on your property. The pictures certainly look like pitch tubes produced by mountain pine beetles. However, ips beetles also produce pitch tubes (see picture in Fact Sheet). The Fact Sheets both provide details on how to confirm the presence of either mountain pine beetle or ips beetle.
