How deep to bury a soaker hose in my garden

Asked March 5, 2017, 2:10 PM EST

Dear Cooperative Extension Expert,
This year I plan on installing a 50' section of soaker hose in my tomato garden. What I would like to know is how deep should I bury this hose or....should I just allow it to remain on the surface? Any additional tips you might add would also be helpful. Thank you.

Yes, it is best to place the soaker hose under a layer of mulch or to bury it under an inch or two of the planting medium. This will save on water evaporation and protect the soaker hose from the elements. The two articles listed below will give you more information about irrigation in the home garden. Thanks for using Ask an Expert.
