Pruning peach trees

Asked March 1, 2017, 12:26 PM EST

My trees need pruning but with the recent warm weather there are buds on the branches. Is it safe to prune? Also last year a late freeze killed all the blossoming buds. Any suggestions to avoid this year.

Take a look at our website for information on stone fruits and pruning. http://extension.umd.edu/growit/fruits/stone-fruit-training-and-pruning

Open blooms are more cold-sensitive than closed buds. Avoid planting in low areas or frost pockets. If possible, cover small trees with a light tarp or other light cover if a frost is expected.
