Apple Tree Weird Object/Growth

Asked February 26, 2017, 5:09 PM EST

While trimming our apple tree last weekend I noticed this weird object attached to the bottom of one of the branches. Any idea what this is? Is this something we need to remove? Our Winesap apple tree is about 15 years old and is in full sun.

Neat find!
No, you should not remove it. This is the egg case of an assassin bug, who is a good guy and will be helpful in your landscape as they are beneficial predator insect that eats other pest insects.

Thanks so much! I have seen Assassin bugs in our garden. I will keep an eye on it to see when they hatch.
