Egg pod on roses - friend or foe?

Asked February 19, 2017, 3:37 PM EST

I just did a heavy prune on some rose bushes and encountered these eggs pods. Can you identify them? Should I be protecting them or tossing them?

This is very good indeed. These are the egg cases of praying mantis. The praying mantis is a beneficial insect which is a predator insect. It eats other insects, which are the bad pest insects in our gardens. By all means protect these.

Praying mantis are fun to observe and watch grow up in your garden. Here is some information about them from our website: http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/insects/predators-praying-mantid-mantis
