From our Easy Gardening publication the specialist says to follow these guidelines for onions:

Fertilizing
Onions grow best when the garden soil is fertilized correctly. Spread 2 to 3
pounds of a fertilizer such as 10-10-10 over a 100-square-feet of garden area. Measure and spread the fertilizer; then mix it with the top 3 to 4 inches of soil.

My co-worker recently wrote an article for the Tyler paper and he said use a balanced lawn fertilizer pre-plant followed by side dressing with ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) 2-3 weeks afterwards once the plants are growing properly. This method is banding it in the row. Idea is to have big and lush onions.
